Firetrust has announced MailWasher Server, which takes a multi-layered approach to identifying and rinsing out spam and malicious e-mail before it can enter the enterprise network.

MailWasher Server uses Bayesian and lexical analysis to identify and remove spam and minimize false positives. Administrators can customize statistical content filtering by selecting among five levels of sensitivity, from conservative to aggressive. In addition, digitally fingerprinted data derived from known spam e-mails described by FirstAlert!, a global spam reporting database, are compared to incoming e-mail traffic and are also used to keep the Bayesian engine up to date.

SMTP server addresses on incoming e-mail are compared to domain name server blacklists to screen out e-mail from open-relay servers commonly hijacked by spammers.

Both IT administrators and end users can set up blacklists and whitelists and can retrieve and examine quarantined e-mail, but administrators control employee access to e-mail management capabilities. For example, an IT manager might allow e-mail marked as financial spam to be retrieved, while pharmaceutical spam might be unavailable for retrieval by employees.

Web-based administration provides access to real-time reporting and remote management access.

Running on existing Windows, Solaris or Linux mail servers, MailWasher requires no new hardware or modification to the existing network or client workstations. Firetrust said that it scales easily "whether a business has 10 employees or 10,000," and that MailWasher Server can be up and running within an hour.

Available now from New Zealand-based Firetrust, MailWasher Server is priced on an annual subscription basis and ranges from $7 to $29 per user.
