Apple Computer plans to open its new retail store just off Central Park in New York next Friday, according to a message posted on the company's Web site.

The new store will be Apple's third in New York City, joining stores in the SoHo neighborhood in lower Manhattan and on Staten Island. It'll be on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, according to a Web page on Apple's site that's counting down the hours until the grand opening. The famous FAO Schwarz toy store shares the same building, with an entrance on the 58th Street corner.

Photos taken of the site last month show a cubelike design as the entrance to the store, and the message on Apple's site featured a picture of a 3D cube above the tagline "Think inside the box." Rumors have circulated that the store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the city that never sleeps, but an Apple representative declined to comment on the store's hours.

Reporters will be given a chance to tour the store one day ahead of the grand opening, according to an invitation distributed by Apple public relations Thursday. Apple will throw the doors open to the public at 6 p.m. Friday.

Apple currently operates 144 retail stores around the world. It opened the first in 2001. During the fourth-quarter holiday season, the company took in more than $1 billion in revenue from those stores, according to an Apple representative. The company is planning to open two new stores--one in Pennsylvania, the other in Southern California--this weekend.
