Telecom tech company Ecuity is bringing VoIP service to mobile devices. The company's Smart Call lets users call any cell phone or landline phone, anywhere in the world, from any broadband-connected or wireless PDA or notebook.

Based on TeleSym's SymPhone Enterprise VoIP software, Smart Call incorporates a virtual private branch exchange (PBX), enabling users to remotely access their office PBX system through a Web interface. The user can then make calls to both SymPhones and four-digit office extensions.

Smart Call is not the first product to enable mobile VoIP calling. Skype for Pocket PC, a PDA version of the recently upgraded Skype VoIP service, also allows users to place calls from wireless handhelds. However, it lacks Smart Call's virtual PBX capabilities.

Among the features available through Smart Call are free in-network calling; caller ID, call waiting, call hold, and three-way calling; automatic call-forwarding; direct dialing from Outlook contact list; and voicemail delivered as "talking e-mail."

Ecuityplans a phased rollout for Smart Call, starting immediately with a limited number of states and communities. By the end of August, more than 2,500 locations across the U.S. will be available.

Introductory calling plans start at $15 per month, with unlimited domestic long distance available for $30 per month.
