Laszlo Systems has received $5 million in venture funding to pursue its software products for constructing sophisticated Web pages, the San Francisco-based start-up said Wednesday. Mitsui & Co. Venture Partners led the round, while earlier investors General Catalyst Partners and Sofinnova Ventures also participated.

Laszlo released its product as open-source software last week under the Common Public License. Laszlo's Web site creation tool combines common browser and server features such as JavaScript, Java, XML and flash to create flashy Web pages.
