Start-up unveils VoIP gear for small offices

Communications technology start-up i2 Telecom International has announced a new voice over Internet Protocol product that's designed for small companies and home offices.

The InternetTalker device, similar in size to a Palm Pilot, sits between a broadband or dial-up Internet connection and a standard telephone, the company said Wednesday.

It converts voice calls to digital packets, which are then routed over i2's global network to send the call over the Internet.

The device is being demonstrated and sold for $99 at Staples Business Expo locations in the northeast United States, according to i2. Service plans range from $9.99 per month for 300 U.S. long-distance minutes to $34.99 per month for unlimited U.S. long-distance calling.

The Boca Raton, Fla.-based start-up said its product also works with wireless routers to provide voice services within 150 feet of an Internet connection.

Several companies in the VoIP market have been trying to target small businesses. Cisco Systems recently launched less-expensive versions of its Internet phone software and services in an attempt to broaden its reach in that market. Last week, Mitel Networks said it was developing a VoIP phone console that works with cell phones.
