Fujitsu Computer Systems announced last week the Stylistic ST5020, a tablet PC promising faster performance, longer battery life, and more robust security features than its predecessor, the ST5000.

Powered by a 1.1GHz Intel Pentium M ultra-low voltage processor, the slate-style Stylistic ST5020 includes 256MB of 333MHz DDR SDRAM (expandable to 2GB); a 40GB, 60GB, or 80GB hard drive; and a 12.1-inch XGA TFT screen. The latter can be viewed at up to 180-degree angles, Fujitsu claimed.

The tablet takes a three-pronged approach to security. Its built-in biometric fingerprint swipe sensor restricts access to networks, e-mail accounts, and other protected systems. Its SmartCard slot can be used to verify identification or make secure online transactions. And its embedded Trusted Platform Module (TPM) enables secure authentication and protects data from unauthorized users.

The Stylistic ST5020's 6-cell, 4,800mAh battery delivers up to six hours of computing time, Fujitsu said. An optional 9-cell, 7,200mAh battery increases the runtime to nine hours. With the standard battery installed, the tablet weighs 3.5 pounds; with the high-capacity batter, 3.9 pounds. It measures 8.7 by 12.8 by 0.8 inches.

Connectivity features include a Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Base-T/TX) LAN adapter and a choice between optional Atheros Super AG (802.11a+b/g) and Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g) Wi-Fi hardware. The tablet is also available with an optional integrated Bluetooth radio.

The Stylistic ST5020 comes standard with a Type II PC Card slot, a shared Memory Stick/Secure Digital slot, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, dual microphones with noise-cancellation capabilities, and a modem. It runs the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 operating system; Fujitsu also supplies Microsoft Office OneNote 2003.

Available now, the Stylistic ST5020 Tablet PC starts at $2,049 for a base configuration.
