Japan's Sony expects to start making money from television sales from the second half of the year, Executive Deputy President Katsumi Ihara was quoted as telling a German newspaper. He told Handelsblatt Sony's hardware business was losing money as it--like rivals Nintendo and Microsoft--sought to push video game consoles onto the market so it could make money later with the video games themselves. "In the case of consumer electronics we have to make profits directly with the devices," he added.
"Our Bravia brand televisions have not contributed anything here so far, and that is bad," Ihara said. "But I expect profits from the television business from the second half of the year." Ihara said Sony was also hoping to score with a video distribution business it is developing. "In the United States we are building up a combined service called Bravia Internet Video Link that lets you download films from the Internet as you would program TV channels," he said.
