Short clip: Special Olympics wiring the Shanghai games

Andre Mendes, CIO of the Special Olympics, explains how they got their circuits and networks up and running in Shanghai so quickly through the generous time of volunteers. Because they are a nonprofit, he explains, they often get to skip a lot of red tape.

>>Well let's dive into that a little bit about some of the technologies and how you were able to wire up all those venues and get the data flowing and dealing with, I would assume that the bandwidth has got some irregularities.

>>Yeah well, you know, it was interesting because in Shanghai we got a tremendous amount of cooperation both from Shanghai Telecom and the government of the city but also from the Chinese Federal Government. So we had a battalion of people from, you know, from the Red Army and from volunteer organizations in China with the networking knowledge that went about wiring all the venues and making sure that the connectivity was appropriate. You know interestingly enough the time to bring up a circuit under those circumstances was actually rather small and rather short and we were able to bring everything online without too much difficulty.

>>Is it different being in a non-profit than in a for profit company in terms of the kinds of resources that you have that you can utilize?

>>It is, you know, for example going back to Shanghai, if we were a for profit organization we would have gone in there and established, you know, a client provider relationship for Shanghai Telecom and we would have gone through the typical process of, you know, procuring circuits and having the installation schedules, you know, and so on so forth. With a not for profit that is working so closely with a city government and a federal government what you find is a tremendous amount of cooperation where people volunteer their time after working hours to wire these circuits, people make sure that things happen without all of the perils of bureaucracy that tend to, you know, impinge upon a customer provider relationship. So, you know, the spirit of cooperation really drives things more than anything else.
