Enough with the Twitter rumors

ZDNet Senior Editor Sam Diaz shares his views on the rumors swirling around Apple buying Twitter for $700 million. Diaz says the gossip is less about Apple and more about the tech press' hunger for some details about the microblogging service's revenue model.

>> I wish that the online rumor mill would just stop already when it comes to Twitter. The latest rumor to surface, an acquisition by Apple. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see that happening. Not at all. Why does Apple need a microblogging site, and where does that fit into its business model? It doesn't. But for Twitter, this consistent presence in the rumor mill demonstrates just how much the tech press, myself included, is hungry for some details of a revenue plan. Twitter is still an evolutionary service. Sure, the executives may have some business models in mind, but users are starting to come up with their own models as well. For me, Twitter is all about news distribution. I follow online publications and random people who share interesting headlines throughout the day. Others I'm told are using Twitter to participate in current-event discussions. Maybe some breaking news or even a live-result show on "Dancing With the Stars". And then there are the many newcomers who registered after Oprah showcased the service on her show. I've come across quite a few newbies, and it seems they're still trying to figure it out, struggling to share something other than irrelevant details of their everyday lives. Like many others, I'm looking forward to hearing with Twitter executives will say when they finally reveal a revenue plan and announcements that's expected in the first half of the year. In the meantime, I'm laying low, waiting for the news and trying to look past the random rumors that show up on the Internet. Like these unsource reports about an acquisition by Apple.
