FMC: Seamless connectivity

Luc Roy: Hi my name is Luc Roy. I'm vice president of Product Planning for Siemens Enterprise Communication. And what I'm going to talk to you about is FMC seamless connectivity.

So what is Fixed Mobile Convergence? Fixed Mobile Convergence is about having a user experience that is the same whether you're in the enterprise, over the cellular network, or even in a remote location that you're at.

So what is the issue in fact? Well most of you actually got a phone number in the enterprise, a voicemail in the enterprise, and maybe even a messaging system within the enterprise. When you go into the cellular network there's actually a second phone number that you probably have, just like me. You also have a second voice mail and then some of you may even have a third one for all we know.

What happens if somebody uses your cellular number and calls you when you're inside the enterprise? So here they are calling you but now they're using your cellular minutes and that costs money.

Well the good news with Fixed Mobile Convergence is that we can fix all of this.

And only have a single phone number. So what you get is a single phone number, a single voicemail, and seamless roaming. Seamless roaming is about imagining taking a call and you'll be able to transparently carry your call as you're going through cellular network and even inside the remote area.

So the way to get started is SIP. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It's actually a standard used for not just voice communication but it's also used for messaging, video, and data communication. That's the first thing you need.

The second thing you need is a wireless LAN that allows you to support voice. Basically in your enterprise you can have a wireless LAN that basically is going to cover all of your enterprise and allow you to seamlessly roam for voice inside your enterprise and possibly even in your remote location.

The third thing you need is the FMC software, the software that will give you the single phone number, single voicemail, and seamless roaming.

So, whether you are sitting at your desk inside the enterprise carrying on a conversation, you're actually walking outside carrying on a conversation over the cellular network, maybe driving with your car, traveling to a warehouse or remote location Fix Mobile Convergence provides you with that single phone number, single voicemail that actually follows you wherever you go, providing you that seamless connectivity that you've always wanted.
