The Motorola Droid - checking the details

Andrew Nusca: Motorola's Droid is a powerhouse. It's better than every other Android phone out there, and on Friday it goes toe-to-toe with the iPhone. It's not nearly as intuitive as that device, but it's much more versatile. And it's got new competition from Day 1, the HTC Droid Eris. Look out Apple.

  • iPhone's first real competition has arrived

Jason D. O'Grady: Droid’s biggest advantages come courtesy of Google’s Android operating system, which graduated to version 2.0. Its open platform, background apps, widgets and customization expose many of the chinks in the iPhone’s armor.

  • Verizon's HTC DROID Eris may be the best $100 smartphone

Matthew Miller: I had a chance to hold and play a bit with the HTC DROID Eris and I could not put it down because the form factor is so compelling. Even though the HTC DROID Eris is available for only $100 HTC did not skimp on the specification

  • FAQ: Android 2.0 and Droid

Ed Burnette: Time to answer some frequently asked questions about Android 2.0 or Eclair from both users and developers. Just for fun I’ve tossed in a few questions about the Motorola DROID as well.

  • Motorola Droid vs. Apple iPhone 3GS vs. Palm Pre

Andrew Nusca: Looking at the Verizon Wireless press release archive page you have to scroll down to the 6th or 7th story to find that the RIM BlackBerry Storm2 was also announced this week with availability occuring a couple of days ago on October 28.

  • iPhone one of the best in the world - it's a carrier problem

Matthew Miller: A recent post called the iPhone one of the worst in the world. After thinking about my experiences with my iPhone 3GS on both AT&T and T-Mobile I really think the author meant the iPhone/carrier combo is the worst in the world.

  • Five interesting new details about Verizon's Moto Droid

Jason Hiner: I did a call with Greg Haller, Verizon Wireless president of the midwest region, and he revealed some more information about Verizon’s Moto Droid smartphone. Here are the five most interesting details

  • Motorola and Palm on the comeback trail?

Matthew Miller: Many of us believed that Palm was on the ropes, but they came out swinging at CES with the announcement of the Pre and WebOS. Motorola hasn't had much success in smartphones but the Cliq and the Droid could change that.

  • With BlackBerry Storm2, RIM wins the battle but loses the smartphone war

Andrew Nusca: Lthe Storm2 doesn’t introduce anything new — it merely fixes what it didn’t get right the first go-around. That’s a pity, because RIM offers little to convince users to convert from the competition or even upgrade from the original model.

  • Smartphone wars; one platform will never rule

Matthew Miller: Analysts are bumping heads trying to predict the winner of the smartphone wars - Apple? Google? But I personally doubt there will ever be a clear cut winner.

  • Hey HTC, where is your new QWERTY Google Android device?

Matthew Miller: Newly launched Android devices including the Samsung Moment, Motorola CLIQ, and Motorola DROID all have QWERTY keyboards while HTC has apparently moved to touchscreen after supplying the G1 with a keyboard.
